Here are a few excerpts of The Update India’s exclusive interview with author Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan
Could you please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a little bit about your background and journey in brief.
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – As Dr Sridevi Soundirarajan (H.G), also known as Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan, my journey is a testament to diverse talents and relentless pursuit of excellence in multiple fields. Hailing from Tamil Nadu, India, I have built a robust academic foundation with a BE in Electronics and Communication Engineering, an MBA, and an MA in Yoga for Human Excellence. My passion for continuous learning is further exemplified by an honorary doctorate award in Literature from the ICONIC PEACE AWARD COUNCIL and an honorary gold medal in literature from DRDC GLOBAL.
In 2020, amid the unprecedented global lockdown, I made a pivotal decision that would reshape my professional and personal life. I chose to leave my software job, a step that marked the beginning of a transformative journey towards discovering my true passion and purpose, my IKIGAI.
During this period of introspection and exploration, I found solace and inspiration in yoga and reading. Yoga, in particular, became a beacon of tranquility and self-discovery. Motivated by this newfound passion, I embarked on an educational journey in yoga, eventually completing my Master’s degree in “Yoga for Human Excellence.” This academic accomplishment was complemented by my certification as a Yoga Teacher, marking the start of my professional path in this field.
Parallel to my yoga journey was my ever-growing love for reading. Books in genres like romantic comedy, mythology, fantasy, and history enriched my life immeasurably. This exploration of diverse literary worlds fueled my desire to share similar magical experiences with others. Thus, I ventured into the realm of writing, aiming to touch the lives of readers as these books had touched mine.
A significant turning point in my life was participating in an essay competition in August 2022. I wrote an essay titled “My First Novel,” which offered a deep dive into the complexities of the five-part epic “Ponniyin Selvan,” condensed into an engaging seven-page piece. The essay’s publication in a prestigious magazine was not just an achievement but the spark ignited my passion for writing.
This success propelled me to write my first poetry book, “Positive Infinity.” This collection of verses, reflecting my journey and insights, was met with critical acclaim and earned three distinguished awards. This achievement was a defining moment, firmly establishing my path as an author and marking a new chapter in my life where I could share my voice and vision with the world.
You have a very impressive and diverse academic portfolio, ranging from engineering to yoga to literature. How did you develop such a wide range of interests and skills? How do you balance and integrate them in your personal and professional life?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – My diverse academic and professional journey stems from an inherent curiosity and a passion for exploring various fields. Beginning with a strong foundation in Electronics and Communication Engineering, I was initially captivated by the logical and structured world of technology. This technical grounding paved the way for further exploration into business management, where I pursued an MBA, blending technical expertise with business acumen.
The transition into Yoga and Literature was a natural progression driven by personal transformation and a deep-seated interest in holistic wellness and the expressive power of words. My Master’s in Yoga for Human Excellence was more than an academic pursuit; it was an integral part of my journey towards a balanced lifestyle. Similarly, my passion for reading led me to delve into the realm of literature, culminating in an honorary doctorate and my own literary contributions.
Integrating these diverse interests into my life is a harmonious blend of discipline, creativity, and continuous learning. My engineering background instills a methodical approach, invaluable in my professional endeavours in yoga and literature. Yoga enriches my life with clarity and focus, essential for managing multiple roles, while literature fuels my creativity, enhancing both my professional and personal experiences. This multifaceted journey is a testament to my belief in lifelong learning and the synergy of diverse knowledge areas.
You are a Bharatanatyam dancer, a certified yoga teacher, an author, a podcaster, a youtuber, and an artist. How do you express your creativity and passion through these different mediums? What are the benefits and challenges of being a multi-talented person?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – In my roles as a Bharatanatyam dancer, certified yoga teacher, author, podcaster, YouTuber, and artist, I embrace a multifaceted approach to expressing creativity and passion. Bharatanatyam is a dance form rich in tradition and storytelling, allowing me to convey emotions and narratives through movement and expression. As a yoga teacher, I intertwine physicality with spirituality, guiding towards holistic wellness and inner peace.
In writing, I delve into human emotions and experiences, crafting narratives that resonate deeply with readers. Podcasting and YouTube are platforms where I connect more directly with my audience, sharing insights and personal stories, thus fostering a more intimate community. As an artist, I explore the visual realm, expressing ideas and emotions that transcend words.
Being multi-talented brings immense benefits, such as the ability to reach diverse audiences and the continuous flow of creative energy across different mediums. However, it also poses challenges. Time management and maintaining excellence in each area require discipline and focus. Balancing these diverse pursuits without compromising quality is a constant endeavor.
Yet, the fulfillment derived from this diverse expression of talents far outweighs the challenges. Each medium adds a unique flavor to my life, enabling personal growth, self-discovery, and the opportunity to impact others in varied and profound ways. This journey is not just about showcasing talents, but about inspiring and connecting with people across the world.

To cope with these expectations, I focus on staying true to my values and goals. I believe in continuous learning and self-improvement, ensuring that I grow and evolve both personally and professionally. Balancing humility with the drive to excel is key. I view these awards not as an end, but as milestones in a lifelong journey of growth, learning, and service to society. You have recently published a new book called “208 Zen-Inspired Samurai Tales: Kids’ Meditation Palette”. What inspired you to write this book and what is it about? How is it different from your previous books? Who is your target audience and what do you hope they will learn from your book?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – “208 Zen-Inspired Samurai Tales: Kids’ Meditation Palette,” my latest publication, is a heartfelt endeavor to introduce the timeless wisdom of Zen and the discipline of the samurai to young minds. This inspiration stemmed from my previous literary works, “200 Zen Stories: Cultivating Positivity and Inner Peace” and “Stressful Life vs. Abundant Life: Yoga in a Samurai Way.” I wanted to create something unique for children, combining engaging storytelling with an interactive artistic experience.
This book stands out from my previous works in its format and target audience. It’s specifically designed for children, offering them a fusion of ancient tales with the joy of coloring. Each of the 208 stories is a carefully crafted parable that appeared in my previous works and imparts valuable life lessons, emphasizing virtues like inner peace, resilience, and mindfulness.
The interactive coloring aspect of the book is what makes it truly special. It’s not just about reading; it’s about immersing oneself in the creative process, allowing children to express themselves artistically while absorbing the deep messages each tale conveys.
I hope this book will be a tool for young readers to develop concentration, mindfulness, and a deeper understanding of life’s complexities in a simple, engaging manner. My aim is for them to not only enjoy the stories and coloring but to internalize the wisdom these tales carry, fostering a generation that is both mindful and creatively expressive.
Your book is based on the concept of Zen, which is a form of Buddhism that emphasizes meditation and mindfulness. How did you get interested in Zen and how do you practice it in your daily life? How does Zen help you to achieve happiness, peace, and harmony?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – The Zen principle of finding beauty in simplicity and focusing on the present has deeply influenced my creative endeavors, whether it’s in writing, podcasting, yoga or anything I do. By incorporating Zen into these activities, I strive to create experiences that are not just about the physical or intellectual aspect but also about nurturing the soul.
In my daily life, Zen practices like mindful meditation and conscious breathing are not just confined to specific sessions; they are woven into the fabric of my day. This constant practice helps me maintain a state of mental clarity and emotional balance, essential for managing the diverse roles I play. It allows me to approach challenges with a calm and composed mindset, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth and learning.
Zen’s teachings on impermanence and the transient nature of life have also helped me develop a perspective of gratitude and acceptance. Embracing the ebb and flow of life with equanimity has been key to achieving a state of inner peace and harmony. This mindset is particularly beneficial in dealing with the pressures and expectations that come with my achievements and public life.
Ultimately, Zen is a guiding force in my quest for happiness and fulfillment. It reminds me that true contentment comes from within, from a deep connection with oneself and the world. Through Zen, I aspire to not only enrich my own life but also to inspire and uplift others, sharing the beauty of living a mindful, purposeful, and peaceful life.
What is the connection between Zen and samurai? How do these tales illustrate the values and principles of Zen? How can they inspire and motivate the modern readers?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – The connection between Zen and the Samurai is deeply rooted in history and philosophy. Samurai, the warriors of ancient Japan, adopted Zen Buddhism to cultivate inner strength, mental clarity, and emotional control. Zen provided them with the mental discipline required to face life-and-death situations calmly and decisively. This fusion of martial prowess and Zen wisdom is a powerful blend of action and contemplation, strength and serenity.
In my book “208 Zen-Inspired Samurai Tales: Kids’ Meditation Palette,” I draw upon this rich heritage. The tales illustrate Zen values like mindfulness, focus, acceptance, and the importance of living in the present moment. They also embody the Samurai principles of honor, courage, and discipline. These stories are designed not just to entertain but to impart lessons that are as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
For modern readers, these tales serve as a source of inspiration and motivation. They teach the importance of resilience, the power of a calm mind, and the virtue of living a life guided by strong ethical principles. In a world that’s increasingly fast-paced and often overwhelming, these stories offer a moment of reflection and a reminder of the simpler, yet profound truths of life. They encourage readers, young and old, to embrace challenges with a balanced mind and to find peace and fulfillment in the journey of life.
Your book is designed as a meditation palette for kids, which means that it offers a variety of exercises and activities to help them relax, focus, and enjoy. How important is it to introduce meditation to kids and what are the benefits of doing so? How can parents and teachers use your book to guide and support their kids in their meditation journey?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – Introducing meditation to children is incredibly important, especially in today’s fast-paced and often stressful world. Meditation offers numerous benefits for kids, including improved focus, reduced anxiety, enhanced emotional regulation, and an overall sense of well-being. It equips them with tools to manage stress and emotions from a young age, fostering resilience and a positive mindset.
“208 Zen-Inspired Samurai Tales: Kids’ Meditation Palette” is designed to be an accessible and engaging way for children to explore the world of meditation. The combination of storytelling and coloring activities in the book provides a multi-sensory experience that naturally draws children into a state of mindfulness. Through the tales, they learn valuable life lessons and principles of Zen philosophy, while the coloring aspect allows them to express creativity and relax their minds.
Parents and teachers can use this book as a guide to introduce meditation and mindfulness practices to children. They can read the stories together, discussing the morals and lessons, and then engage in coloring the illustrations. This shared activity not only aids in the child’s learning and mental development but also strengthens the bond between the child and the adult. Additionally, it can be used as a starting point for a daily or weekly meditation practice, helping children to cultivate a habit of mindfulness that can support their emotional and mental health throughout their lives.
Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences with us, Dr. Sridevi. It has been a wonderful and enlightening conversation. Before we wrap up, do you have any final words of wisdom or advice for our readers who want to follow your example and spread positivity in the world?
Dr. Sridevi K.J. Sharmirajan – Thank you for this engaging conversation. If I were to share a piece of advice for those aspiring to spread positivity in the world, it would be to start with oneself. The journey towards spreading positivity begins with cultivating it within. Embrace self-awareness, practice gratitude, and seek to understand and manage your emotions. This inner harmony is the cornerstone of being able to positively influence others.
In your interactions, be kind, empathetic, and listen actively. Often, the simple act of listening can have a profound impact on others. Remember that positivity isn’t just about being happy all the time; it’s about maintaining a hopeful and resilient attitude, even in the face of challenges.
Also, pursue your passions and interests wholeheartedly. When you engage in activities that you love and find meaningful, your enthusiasm and joy naturally radiate outwards, influencing those around you. Whether it’s through art, writing, teaching, or any other medium, find your unique way to contribute positively to the world.
Lastly, never underestimate the power of small acts of kindness. A smile, a thoughtful gesture, or a supportive word can make a significant difference in someone’s day. Positivity is contagious, and even the smallest actions can ripple outwards, creating a more hopeful and uplifting environment for everyone around the world.
