Uttar Pradesh, May 7: India’s dairy sector is witnessing a major shift with the growing adoption of GauSort, an indigenous bovine gender-sorting technology developed to increase the birth rate of female calves and improve milk productivity.
Introduced by Narendra Modi in 2024, the technology was developed by the National Dairy Development Board in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission. It is currently being implemented through NDDB Dairy Services across multiple states.
According to officials, the technology has recorded nearly 91 per cent female calf births under Project Gir Varanasi, a result being viewed as a significant development for dairy farmers seeking higher milk-producing livestock and more stable incomes.
The impact is also being reported in western Uttar Pradesh districts including Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Hapur and Shamli, where similar success rates have been observed.
NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah said the initiative could help strengthen rural livelihoods by improving breeding efficiency and long-term dairy productivity.
Farmers using the technology say it has reduced uncertainty around calf gender while improving prospects for dairy expansion. With wider implementation underway, GauSort is increasingly being seen as a key intervention in modernising India’s livestock and dairy ecosystem.
