Philosophy based fiction is increasingly becoming a trending genre in contemporary Indian fiction. John Green may be considered the torch bearer of this genre internationally but in India this title clearly belongs to Rahul Saini. He has been sprinkling philosophical ideas in his stories ever since the release of his first novel, Those Small Little Things which came out in 2009 and this trait of his writing has only grown more mature and stronger over the years and is, for sure, the most powerful feature of his latest novel, The Part I Left With You.

The novel is a light hearted yet remarkable take on mental depression. It also makes some noteworthy comments on the nature and importance of romantic relationships. The story revolves around three main characters – Ronit Sukhdev, Ratna Jamwal and Nitasha Sharma. Ronit has enjoyed his heyday of fame as an author but now is battling depression ever since he broke up with his girlfriend Nitasha and has not written anything in years. While Nitasha is trying to explore the possibilities life has to offer her, Ronit, is forced to spend time with a starry-eyed fan who had vowed to pull the once famous author out of his state of absolute despair.

What stands out for this novel is the love triangle which is unlike any love triangle you have ever read before. Parts of this novel are so delightful and funny that the readers are reminded of Emily Henry’s novels. (Yes, it is a story about authors and the way they think and behave.)

The Part I Left With You is a poignant and captivating novel that takes readers on a profound journey of love, loss, and the pursuit of redemption. With his signature storytelling finesse, Saini weaves together a compelling narrative that explores the complexities of human relationships, the power of forgiveness, and the indomitable spirit of the human heart. This is a literary gem that delves into the remarkable depths of human emotions and resonates with its readers emotionally.

A tale of unforgettable connections:

At the heart of this novel lies a tale of interconnected lives and the everlasting impacts of the choices the characters make. Saini introduces us to a diverse ensemble of characters, each grappling with their own demons and haunted by their past decisions. From the enigmatic protagonist burdened with guilt to the strong-willed yet vulnerable female lead, every character is skilfully crafted which makes them feel real and relatable. May it be the bubbly and cheerful Ratna, calm and composed Nitasha or the cynical and secretive Ronit, as a reader you feel and empathize for each one of them.

Emotional Depth and Resonance:

Saini’s strength lies in his ability to evoke a myriad of emotions through his words, and The Part I Left With You is no exception. The novel deftly navigates the complex landscape of love, grief, and the pursuit of redemption. It explores the depths of human emotions, delving into themes of forgiveness, second chances, and the power of self-discovery. Saini’s evocative prose immerses readers in a world of raw emotions, leaving a profound impact long after the final page.

Nuanced Character Development:

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is Saini’s skilful development of characters. Each individual is brought to life with remarkable depth and complexity. Their flaws, vulnerabilities, and hidden strengths are masterfully portrayed, allowing readers to form deep connections with them. As the story unfolds, we witness their personal growth, inner struggles, and the transformative power of love and forgiveness. Saini’s characters feel like old friends, their journeys intertwining with our own.

A gripping and engaging Narrative:

Saini’s storytelling prowess shines brightly in this novel. The narrative unfolds at a perfect pace, seamlessly blending past and present, keeping readers engaged and intrigued. The intricate plot twists and turns, revealing layers of secrets and untangling the intricate web of relationships and complexes.

A Testament to the Human Spirit:

Ultimately, The Part I Left With You is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through the characters’ journeys, Saini reminds us of the importance of forgiveness, self-acceptance, and the healing power of love. It serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst the darkest moments, there is always hope and the potential for redemption.

This novel is unique and quite exceptional considering the kind of love stories we have been served in the recent past. It has an old school charm but is still very timely and showcases Rahul Saini’s extraordinary talent for storytelling. With its profound exploration of love, loss, and the human spirit, the novel leaves a lasting impression on readers. This is definitely Saini’s strongest work till date. The evocative prose, nuanced character development, and gripping narrative makes this novel a must-read for anyone seeking a deeply moving and thought-provoking, yet a light literary experience.
