IVPA Welcomes Government’s Move to Reintroduce Standardised Edible Oil Pack Sizes

New Delhi, June 7, 2026: The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) has welcomed the government’s decision to reintroduce standardised edible oil pack sizes through a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), describing it as a significant step towards improving transparency and ensuring fair trade in the edible oil market.

The policy follows sustained consultations between the government and industry bodies, led by IVPA along with other trade associations. It seeks to eliminate fractional and non standard retail packaging, making it easier for consumers to compare prices while promoting greater clarity across the retail market.

According to the association, the move is expected to curb misleading packaging practices that have created confusion among consumers and distorted market competition over the past several years.

IVPA President Sudhakar Desai welcomed the decision, stating that the consultative approach adopted by the government has helped address a long standing concern of the industry. He noted that while non standard pack sizes were initially introduced to provide flexibility, they eventually led to widespread proliferation of irregular packaging formats, resulting in confusion across the marketplace.

Desai said the reintroduction of standard pack sizes would restore order to retail shelves, create a level playing field for businesses, and enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions with greater confidence.

The association also highlighted that the coordinated efforts of industry stakeholders and the government’s timely intervention demonstrate the value of public private collaboration in strengthening consumer protection and improving regulatory clarity.

Established over five decades ago, the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association is the apex trade body representing India’s edible oil and oilseed value chain. The organisation works closely with policymakers and industry stakeholders to promote sustainable growth, innovation, fair trade practices, and consumer welfare across the sector.
